James Coulter (1852 - 1930)

James is my paternal great grandfather. He was born about 1852 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, the son of William Coulter and Mary Ann Grace. (I have no information concerning William or Mary Ann, except that they lived in County Antrim, Ireland - which would include Belfast.)

James died from Bronchopneumonia on the 24th February 1930 at 148 McLean Street, Plantation, Govan, Glasgow.

James married Annie Coulter, daughter of Joseph Coulter and Eliza Jane Barron on the 31st December 1877. They were married at Moss Side, Bruce Road, Pollokshields after Banns according to the Church  of Scotland. The Minister presiding was James Wallace, Minister of Plantation Parish. The witnesses were Ann Coulter and James Allison. James gave his occupation as Dyer (Journeyman) and Annie as a Biscuit Factory Packer. They both gave their address as 68 St James Street (Front Landing).

James and Annie had eight children.

The earliest record of James living in Scotland is found in the 1871 Census which records him living as a boarder at 6 Ritchie Street, Tradeston, Govan, Glasgow; and working as a labourer in an Iron Works. By 1881 he was married to Annie and living at 104 Henderson Street (aka Howwood Street), Kinning Park, Glasgow with Annie and eldest son William. His occupation in 1881 was recored as Steam Crane Porter.

In 1891* he and Annie were living at 48 Cornwall Street, Govan, Glasgow with their children William (11), Joseph (7), Robert (2), and Agnes (2 months). His occupation was recorded as Boilermakers Labourer. By 1901 the family, which now included Anne (Annie) (3) were living at 50 Cornwall Street, Govan, Glasgow. James occupation was recorded as Smiths Striker.

In 1911 the family were living at 38 McLean Street, Plantation, Govan, Glasgow.  William had returned, along with his son Alexander, to live with his parents after the death of his wife Maggie. James occupation was recorded as Roadman working for the town council.

(* Note the 1891 Census spells the family name as Caulter. Such "errors" in spelling are commonplace and resulted largely from the name being transcribed from how it was spoken. Whilst I would pronounce my name cool ter I can recall my grandmothers pronunciation being col ter.)
