James Coulter (1886 - 1958)

James was my grandfather. The son of James Coulter and Annie Coulter he was born at 18 St James Terrace, Kinning Park, Glasgow on the 9th January 1886 and died at the Southern General Hospital, 1301 Govan Road, Glasgow on 12th November 1958.

The picture below is of St James Terrace taken around 1910 which is titled  below "3 dwellings, 3 apartments 24 dwellings 1 apartment: 2 wash-houses containing in all 29 taps and 8 WC's." (Source: Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland - http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/details/1078547/)

James married twice, first to Annie Scott Francis Veitch and then after her death to my grandmother Agnes Craig.

At age 24  James was still living with his parents at 38 McLean Street, Plantation, Glasgow.  The 1911 Census records that he was employed as a Brassmoulder at a general brassfounders.

James married Annie, daughter of William Veitch and Annie Young, on the 30th April 1912. Prior to their marriage Annie lived at 24 Rutland Crescent which lies between Govan Road and Paisley Road West just to the west of the Angel Building at Paisley Road Toll.  (The area is one of the many in this part of Glasgow that has been redeveloped - and as the picture of Rutland Crescent above demonstrates, many fine buildings lost as a result!). James lived at 2 Merryland Street.  Their banns were according to the forms of the United Free Church. The witnesses were Robert Veitch (Annie's brother by adoption) and Alexander Templeton.

James and Annie had one child:  Robert Veitch Coulter (1914 - 1918)

Annie died on the 18th November 1914.  The cause of death was Acute Nephritis Anasarca (Scarlet Fever).

James married my grandmother, Agnes Blackhall Craig, in Plantation Parish Church on the 7th December 1928. Agnes was born out of wedlock to Mary Craig (a farm servant), daughter of Matthew Craig and Agnes Guthrie, who later (prior to 1928) married George Cooper (a ploughman). The Minister at the wedding was John Cooper. The witnesses were James and Barbara Gourlay of 2 Iona Street, Govan, Glasgow.

James and Agnes had two children: Barbara Gourlay Coulter (1929 - 2009) and my father James Coulter (1931 - 2000).

James and Agnes moved into 115 Moulin Circus, Cardonald, Glasgow shortly after the end of WW II. The property was occupied by my family up until Barbara's death in 2009. According to neighbours my grandparent were the first to move into Moulin Circus.
