Joseph, the son of James Coulter and Annie Coulter, was born at 32 Tower Street, Govan, Glasgow on the 8th August 1883.
The 1891 Census records Joseph at the age of 7 living at 48 Cornwall Street, Govan, Glasgow with his parents and siblings. By 1901, at age 17, he was living at 50 Cornwall Street, again with his parents. His occupation is recorded as "Apprentice Boot Tapper".
Joseph married Janet Brown in Edinburgh on the 28th June 1907.
In 1911 Joseph, Janet and their son James Brown Coulter (who had been born two years earlier) were living at 26 Wardlaw Place, Gorgie, Edinburgh. Joseph was employed as a Boot Tapper.
He died at 30 Hutchison Avenue, Edinburgh, Scotland on the 5th October 1948.
